Exploring Notan as a Painting Tool.

I’ve discovered a new painting tool called Notan. I’m in the very early stages of learning about Notan, and I’m hooked. I love how it cuts through all the noise of a reference to reveal the bones.

In my value studies, I typically include mid-tones, which can be helpful; however, they sometimes lead me to get lost in those middle values. Notan, on the other hand, removes unnecessary details, revealing the essential framework needed to create a strong painting.

I’ve added Notan to my daily painting practice it feels awkward and clunky right now, and I can start to see the benefits of viewing a subject through the lens of Notan.
